BANGALORE– A pharmaceutical company in New Zealand has just completed a clinical trial in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) who were prescribed Viagra to help treat a common condition, including pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), which is the primary cause of ED, has been linked to Viagra’s popularity among patients.

“We’re going to continue to evaluate Viagra use in people with PAH,” said Dr Naveed Abbasi, a urologist, consultant, and senior author at New Zealand’s NIDDK. “The results are expected shortly.”

The Viagra study, which involved patients aged 18 and above, was conducted by researchers at George Washington University School of Medicine.

“We’re very excited about the study,” said Dr Naveed. “The study’s goal is to see whether there’s any benefit in using Viagra.”

According to the study, patients taking Viagra were at risk of developing PAH if they had diabetes, had high blood pressure, were older than 60, were taking high doses of nitrates and had had a recent history of heart attack, stroke or other heart problems. A third group of patients had had their blood pressure measured during a physical examination before the study.

Dr Naveed said that the Viagra study involved a subset of patients, who were only prescribed the drug for short-term erections. The Viagra study is not a placebo trial and does not affect the results of the Viagra trial.

“We are really excited about this trial,” said Dr Naveed. “It’s a landmark clinical trial.”

Viagra was originally developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but has proven to be effective in treating PAH and other conditions, including heart failure and stroke. Viagra is only approved for short-term use in some countries, but has also been used off-label for other conditions, including erectile dysfunction.

“We’re very pleased with the results of the Viagra trial. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people differently,” Dr Naveed said. “We’re looking forward to using Viagra in a real sense of the word.”

Dr Naveed said that Viagra was available to people over the age of 18, who were prescribed it for the treatment of PAH. The drug can be purchased under different brand names and can be taken orally with or without food.

“It’s great to see a real-world study where it’s not possible to just buy Viagra from a pharmacy,” he added. “But I think this will be very beneficial to patients.”

The Viagra trial is currently being run by the company Pfizer, which is part of Pfizer’s international research arm.

Dr Naveed said that Pfizer’s recent clinical study found that Viagra’s popularity among patients with PAH was significantly higher than other treatments. “The Viagra study is very important to us,” he said.

The company is working to develop and commercialise Viagra as a treatment for PAH. The drug’s use in patients with PAH has been under investigation since 2014, when the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition in which blood vessels are narrowed and can constrict.

The FDA has also warned that Viagra may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with heart failure and is contraindicated in patients with a history of heart attack or stroke.

In a statement, Pfizer said that the company was “reviewing potential safety and efficacy data in patients with PAH and in patients with other cardiovascular diseases”.

Pfizer will continue to work with the New Zealand FDA to ensure that Viagra is safe and appropriate for patients with PAH.
